Piggery Attendant (1)

Job Title: Piggery Attendant (1)

Duty Station: Masulita, Wakiso District

Job Summary: 

The Piggery Attendant will be responsible for the daily management of pigs at the Masulita unit. This includes feeding, cleaning, animal welfare monitoring, supporting breeding and farrowing activities, and maintaining biosecurity/health standards. The attendant will work closely with their supervisor to ensure optimal weight gain, reproductive success, and health outcomes.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Feed pigs according to prescribed rations for growers, sows, boars, and piglets.
  • Clean and disinfect pens, feeders, and drinkers daily to prevent disease outbreaks.
  • Monitor animal health and behavior; report signs of illness, injury, or abnormal feeding.
  • Assist in routine veterinary care including deworming, vaccination, and farrowing support.
  • Record feed consumption, births, mortalities, and treatment schedules in farm logs.
  • Enforce biosecurity protocols: footbaths, PPE use, and controlled unit access.
  • Support breeding schedules by separating boars and gilts as instructed.
  • Assist in loading/unloading pigs during sale or restocking.
  • Support infrastructure maintenance and routine pen inspections.
  • Participate in on-farm training and internal performance reviews.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or equivalent.
  • Certificate in Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Assistance, or Livestock Production is an added advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum 1–2 years’ hands-on experience working on a piggery farm (commercial preferred).
  • Familiarity with intensive pig housing, weaning practices, and reproductive care is desirable.

Technical skills required

  • Knowledge of pig breeds (e.g. Large White, Camborough), nutrition, and housing systems.
  • Ability to administer basic treatments and identify early signs of disease (e.g. African swine fever, pneumonia).
  • Capacity to maintain farm records and assist in data reporting.
